THE CONCEPT “VALENCY” AS AN OBJECT OF LINGUISTICS AND METHODS OF TEACHING RUSSIAN LAN-GUAGE AT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION
Abstracts

Introduction. The concept of “valency” is considered in the article both in the general theoretical plan and in the practice of teaching students the Russian language. As a result of studying valency in the course of the modern Russian language, students should have an idea of valency as a universal semantic-grammatical category, realized at different language levels, reflecting the connection between semantic (potential) and syntactic (real) actants.

Materials and methods. The material for publication was curricula and textbooks on the modern Russian language for universities, linguistic dictionaries and encyclopedias. The main research method was the analysis of scientific and methodological literature.

Results. The formation of the concept of “valency” among students begins when studying the semantic structure of a word and phraseological unit in the “Semantics” section. Students are given an idea of valency from the standpoint of two semantic levels: conceptual and linguistic. This suggests a logical and semantic valency. Further development of the concept takes place at the next morphological level: the morphological valency reflects the ability of a word of any part of speech to combine with words of a particular class or with a specific grammatical form of the word. The next stage in the formation of the concept of “valency” is implemented in the study of syntax, primarily in the sections “Phrase” and “Simple sentence”. In the process of studying valency, students form an idea of it as a universal semantic-grammatical category.

Discussion. The concept of “valence” is important both in General theoretical terms and in the practice of teaching students the Russian language. At first, the concept of "valence" was used in linguistics in relation to verbs to describe their semantic and syntactic properties. In the modern period of development of linguistics, the concept of valency is used in relation to other parts of speech, it is also applied to phonetic, word-forming units and to the text as a whole. Carriers of valency are, first of all, procedural units-verbs and phraseological units. The valency of a verb is understood as the ability to combine with a certain range of actants. Valence is related to different language levels: semantic (structure of word meaning and phraseology), morphological (pledge), syntactic (management). In this regard, it is necessary to study the concept in the University systemically.

Conclusion. As a result of studying valency in different sections of the modern Russian language course, students should have an idea of it as a universal semantic-grammatical category, realized at different language levels, reflecting the connection between semantic, potential, and syntactic, real, actants.

Highlights

The definition and characterization of valency as a semantic-grammatical category is given. Named language levels, studying which, students form an idea of valency. The stages of the formation of the concept of valency in a student of a higher educational institution with a degree in Philology are determined.
