Introduction. The article explains the relevance of using an electronic form of the textbook as an efficient tool of the complex teaching technology in L2 teaching of the Theoretical Phonetics of the English Language in accordance with the methodical requirements of the “Core of Higher Pedagogical Education”. The article evaluates digitalization as the method for teaching subject content of the L2 curriculum. The aim of the paper to analyze the formal and content differences of the printed an electronic forms of the textbook, to identify positive and negative qualities of the printed form and the electronic form of the textbook on the Theoretical Phonetics of the English Language through comparison and to reveal their influence on the structure of the teaching process, on the ability of the participants to adapt to variations in the teaching process, and on prognostication of its results.
Materials and Methods. The main research methods used in the article involve general scientific methods and specific scientific methods: analysis of research on the problem of digitalization, which aims at identifying most significant factors that direct digitalization; cognitive-discursive approach to L2 teaching which provides the interdisciplinary character of the research; comparative analysis including diagnostic methods such as testing and methods of statistical data processing to provide the quantitative evaluation of the results.
Results. The study verifies the usage of the electronic form of the textbook on the Theoretical Phonetics of the English Language as the tool of the complex teaching technology in L2 teaching; the electronic form promotes this technology as facilitating a number of tasks, not only those that involve working with the syllabus on the course but also general pedagogical tasks that concern operating practices of efficiently distributing memory and attention psychophysiological resources to aid the learning process. The study also identifies positive and negative qualities of the two forms of the textbook which may interfere with this process.
Discussion. The study shows that in the long run using the electronic form of the textbook on Theoretical Phonetics of the English Language is efficient regarding the efficiency of L2 teaching because it provides for the polymodal character of the used materials. It is also efficient economically, as it reduces the expenses for updating the textbook stock in accordance with the requirements of the “Core of Higher Pedagogical Education”.
Conclusion. The conclusion runs that the electronic form of the textbook on the Theoretical Phonetics of the English Language facilitates efficient and prompt development of general and special professional competence as required by the “Core of Higher Pedagogical Education”. The efficiency increases due to a number of factors. The electronic form is convenient in use as it has key word search function that allows to manage time while getting ready for the assessment. The polymodal character of the illustrating materials and assessment materials aids efficient distribution of the memory and attention psychophysiological resources which allows to retrieve information from long-term memory.
