MASTER'S THESIS AS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF A FUTURE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER
Abstracts

Introduction. In the system of training a future foreign language teacher special attention is paid to the graduation qualification paper in the form of a master’s thesis, which allows one to assess the level of development of the entire complex of universal, general professional and special professional competencies. This article is devoted to the study of the type of a master’s thesis, which combines linguistic and pedagogical aspects with research activities both in the field of linguistics and education.

Materials and Methods. The main research methods used in this article are the analysis and generalization of theoretical psychological and pedagogical literature on the problems of organizing masters’ training and the development of research and design competencies of undergraduate students. In addition, pedagogical reflection and analysis of the authors’ pedagogical experience as teachers of higher school and managers of training programs for masters of education are used. The research materials are presented by federal regulations relating to the field of education; local normative documents of the university; texts of graduation qualification papers on the masters’ program “Language education (English)”.

Results. It was revealed that in terms of professional training of a future foreign language teacher the most promising type of master’s thesis is the one, combining two aspects:

– relevant linguistic research, which is of interest from the point of view of studying linguistic phenomena (lexical, grammatical, stylistic, linguoculturological) in the educational process at school, institutions of additional education or at a university;

– development of an appropriate methodological system aimed at mastering these linguistic phenomena in the process of learning a foreign language.

Discussion. In the process of research activities for the pre-

paration of the graduation qualification paper of the combined type, all groups of competencies develop: universal, general professional, professional. At the same time, the emphasis is on the leading professional competence: the ability to carry out fundamental and (or) applied research in the field of education and science. In other words, conducting research both in the field of linguistics and in the sphere of methods of teaching a foreign language ensures the research focus of the master’s program.

Conclusion. The optimal professional training, focused on research, within the framework of the master’s program “Language Education (English)” is possible if the graduation qualification paper is based on the research process in two scientific fields: linguistics and linguodidactics / methods of teaching a foreign language.

In the process of preparing a master’s thesis, the much-needed professional competence of a future teacher, consisting in the ability to carry out fundamental and (or) applied research in the field of education and science, is developed;

This competence ensures the mastery of scientific know-ledge and research skills in the areas equally important for the future teacher: a foreign language and foreign language teaching.
