Introduction. The article substantiates the relevance of studying state-confessional relations in the history of Russia as a scientific and methodological support for the discipline “Fundamentals of state policy in the field of interethnic and interfaith relations” of the educational activity module of the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education. The purpose of the article is to substantiate and reveal the educational potential of the course “State-confessional relations in the history of Russia.

Materials and methods. The main methods of research are the analysis of scientific literature devoted to the problem of education of patriotism, civic identity, spiritual and moral values in the teaching of disciplines of historical content.

Results. Based on the content of the course “State-confessional relations in the history of Russia”, the possibility of patriotic education of students of a pedagogical university is substantiated as part of the implementation of the educational module of educational programs in all areas of pedagogical education. The position is proved that knowledge of the history of relations between the Russian state and religious organizations contributes to the understanding by students of historically established spiritual and moral values, political, cultural, religious, national traditions, forms a sense of civic identity and patriotism.

Discussion. It is emphasized that the effectiveness of the study of the course is the implementation of the tasks set for the Russian education in the education of student youth.

Conclusion. It is concluded that the result of studying the history of relations between the state and confessions in the history of Russia will be not only the development of ideological beliefs of student youth, and the formation of a sense of citizenship and patriotism, but also the preparation of future teachers for professional activities in a multi-ethnic and multicultural educational environment.

The relevance of patriotic education of youth in modern conditions is substantiated;

Defined the conceptual apparatus of the educational process, the modern legal basis for ensuring the functioning of the system of patriotic education of citizens of the Russian Federation;

The possibilities of studying the history of state-confessional relations in the history of Russia in the implementation of the tasks of patriotic education of student youth are presented;

Such components of the course as heroic-patriotic pages in the history of state-confessional relations, the regional component of the course, as well as the research work of students have educational potential.
