DIAGNOSTICS OF MATHEMATICAL LITERACY IN SCHOOLCHILDREN
Abstracts

Introduction. The development of diagnostic tools for the formation of mathematical literacy should be based on an analysis of the quality being diagnosed. The article shows an approach to studying the composition of mathematical literacy based on identifying a list of universal educational actions performed by primary school students when solving practice-oriented problems.

Materials and methods. The main research methods are the analysis of literature on the phenomenon of mathematical literacy, comparison of the structure of mathematical literacy with the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard of Basic General Education, approved by order of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation No. 287 of May 31, 2021, which made it possible to create a specification of diagnostic materials and develop complex diagnostic tasks, experimental verification of diagnostic materials and methods of mathematical statistics for processing the experimental results.

Results. A low level of mathematical literacy was found with a sufficient level of mathematical knowledge. The main problems in the formation of mathematical literacy are related to the ability to take into account the context and anticipate difficulties associated with solving a problem, identify deficiencies in information necessary for solving a problem and argue one's position. The reason for this is the insufficient development of students' skills in meaningful reading, which involves identifying in the text of the task the information necessary for its implementation, and speech means for expressing one's thoughts.

Discussion. The results of the diagnosis of mathematical literacy of 9th grade students in Chelyabinsk generally correlate with the results of similar studies conducted in our country and abroad, which indirectly indicates both the quality of the developed diagnostic materials and similar problems in the formation of mathematical literacy of schoolchildren from different countries.

Conclusion. For the effective development of mathematical literacy, it is necessary to take into account the obtained diagnostic results and organize students' activities in mathematics lessons that promote the development of skills to take into account the context, identify information deficiencies necessary to solve a problem and argue their position. At the same time, the basis for the development of mathematical literacy of students is a good level of mastery of the program material in mathematics. It is necessary to train current and future mathematics teachers in the methodology for developing universal educational activities related to the development of mathematical literacy, and provide them with appropriate didactic tools.

Highlights

In the development of diagnostic tools for mathematical literacy in Russian schoolchildren, it is advisable to focus on the universal educational activities of students presented in the Federal State Educational Standard of Basic General Education;

Complex tasks developed on the basis of the analysis of the structure of mathematical literacy diagnose mathematical knowledge and skills and units of mathematical literacy proper as the ability to apply mathematics in a variety of practical situations;

The analysis of the results of the diagnosis of mathematical literacy in schoolchildren made it possible to identify the causes of their difficulties and formulate proposals to improve the mathematical literacy in schoolchildren.
