EXTRACURRICULAR WORK AS A FACTOR IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FUNCTIONAL LITERACY OF A FUTURE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER
Abstracts

Introduction. The article is devoted to the study of the role of extracurricular activities in the functional literacy deve-lopment of a future foreign language teacher. The example of such extracurricular communicative activity is given within the framework of a speaking club. This form of extracurricular activity performed in a foreign language aims at the development of foreign language communicative competence. The competence is included in the components of the professional training for students intending to be teachers and their readiness for future professional activities. The authors consider the features of the organization for this extracurricular work variation, its goals and didactic potential.

Materials and methods. The following methods of pedagogical research were applied during the research: the analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature on the problem under study, analysis, generalization, and reflection of the authors' own pedagogical experience. In order to obtain empirical data, a survey and questioning of students and professors are used.

Results. We clarify the concepts of functional literacy necessary for a future foreign language teacher, and extracurricular foreign language work in a pedagogical university. The relationship between functional literacy and foreign language communicative competence of the future foreign language teacher is revealed. The specificity, role, and aspects of students' communicative performance within the framework of a speaking club as a form of extracurricular activity are considered; also, the influence of regular meetings in the club on the development of students' functional literacy is revealed.

Discussion. The functional literacy of a future foreign language teacher can be effectively developed through the integrated classroom and extracurricular activities of students. Mastering foreign language communicative competence by students as a component of functional literacy is more successful if they are involved in extracurricular communicative activities such as a speaking club.

Conclusion. Extracurricular activity represented by a speaking club at a faculty of foreign languages makes a significant contribution to the development of a functionally literate foreign language teacher, expands their communicative potential, contributes to the formation of professionally significant qualities and, in general, increases the quality of professional and pedagogical training offered to future foreign language teachers.
