Students’ actualization of personal values as the condition of their moral and patriotic upbringing

Introduction. The paper examines the correspondence of students’ personal values and the possibilities to actualize them in the country nowadays as the condition for developing their patriotism.

Materials and methods. Firstly,this investigation includes the analyses of scientific literature devoted to the issue of patriotism. Secondly, it analyzes Russian scientists’ researches devoted to the problem of patriotism and frames of reference. Thirdly, the authors employ the method of “Self-assessment of basic values realizability” and the Color Metaphors Method, as well as the following statistical methods: root-mean-square deviation and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient rs.

Results. The results of the research demonstrate that the students prefer individualistic values to social ones. Moreover, the correlation between cognitive and affective components of personal value assessment is evident. The authors also highlight the similarity of students’ emotions towards the concepts of “patriotism” and “my native city (town)”. The most significant values and patriotic terms are not coherent.

Discussion. The paper supports the previous studies of personal and patriotic values of students and supplement them with new findings. Firstly, the real state of things in the country is not perceived as favorable to actualize personal values. Secondly, the concept of “patriotism” reveals through affection to the geographic location where a person was born and where he/she grew up. Finally, the findings indicate the participants’ low willingness to influence the state of things and change it for the better.

Conclusion. The research indicates that it is quite necessary to consider students’ values, attitude and interests while designing technologies of moral-patriotic upbringing.
