Introduction. The article justifies the relevance of studying paternity as a psychological phenomenon, the study overviews the current research problems of paternal identityformation. The article aims at presenting the results of the study focused on exploring the ideas of paternity in adolescence and early adulthood.
Materials and methods. It was used a set of complementary methods of research: theoretical and methodological analysis of literature sources, psychodiagnostic methods (method of semantic differential, developed by Ch. Osgood, projective technique “Incomplete sentences”, questionnaire “Role expectations and claims in marriage” by A. N. Volkova), methods of applied statistics.
Results. Using of correlation analysis has confirmed the hypothesis that the content and hierarchical structure of qualities in the images of “Ideal father”, “I-am-a-future father” are related to the type of family self-determination of young men and women. The obtained re-
sults will be useful in developing a program of psycho-pedagogical support in cultivating a responsible and involved paternity among today’s youth.
Conclusion. The author concluded that the type of family self-determination stipulates particular ideas about paternity among young men and women.
