A SONG AS A MEANS OF STUDENTS’ SOCIAL COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING
Abstracts

Introduction. The article is devoted to the issue of students’ awareness of sociocultural competence while studying foreign languages.

Materials and methods. Pedagogical resources were analyzed, a list of songs was made and lyrics of songs were carefully analyzed.

Results. The author points out that the forming of sociocultural competence means enriching students’ linguistic, aesthetic and ethical knowledge of English-speaking countries. Besides it helps to find out information about the features of the national culture and human values. Sociocultural competence includes such components as linguistic-cultural, sociolinguistic, socio-psychological and culturological.

Discussion. The article highlights that the song can be a means of the development of students’ sociocultural competence. The author considers using several types of exercises (receptive, reproductive, creative, etc.) while working with songs. Moreover, different examples of British and American songs are given with comments on their sociocultural information.

Conclusion. The author concludes by saying that the song is a per-fect way to develop students’ personality and their cultural perception.

It was revealed that the songs reflect actual social, everyday problems, historical and political events.
