Study of police officers’ emotional burnout in the context of their psychological safety
Abstracts

Introduction. The article proves the urgency of studying the police officers’ emotional burnout and preventing it as a considerable resource for developing their psychological safety. On the basis of review of the modern ideas, the authors substantiate their understanding of emotional burnout as psychological deformation of a person that can contribute to the violation of police officers’ psychological safety, and prove the need to prevent its emergence. The aims of the article are to characterize the police officers’ emotional burnout syndrome, to show the features of its development taking into account the individual psychological characteristics revealed at professional psychological selection, and to justify the need to prevent its emergence in the context of psychological safety.

Materials and methods. The main research methods are the following: the analysis of scientific literature devoted to the problem of psychological safety of police employees and personal resources for its strengthening; diagnostic methods, including observation, description, conversation, testing, and methods of statistical data processing. The empirical data was obtained using V. V. Boyko’s technique “Emotional burnout diagnostics”.

Results. The article analyzes the empirical data of studying the police officers’emotional burnout in the context of their psychological safety development. The authors reveal the features of separate phases and symptoms of emotional burnout and prove their dependence on individual and personal characteristics and on the length of service.

Discussion. The authors emphasize that the development of the syndrome of police officers’ emotional burnout depends on their individual and personal characteristics and length of service. Furthermore, the research substantiates the necessity of improving the system of police officers’ professional psychological training and outlines the prospects for its implementation.

Conclusion. The paper proves that the study of emotional burnout as police officers’ psychological deformation, and analysis of the features of its development, taking into account various conditions and factors of official activity, contribute to increasing the effectiveness of preventing its emergence and to the development of psychological safety.
