Introduction. The article is devoted to the importance of conscious attitude to the definitions of linguistic terms, because modern dictionaries of linguistics cannot always reflect the current state of the metalanguage of science. The problem is that some terms do not have an exact meaning and sometimes single interpretation (e.g. oxymoron, chiasm, zeugma, segmentation, rhyme). The aim of this article is to contribute to the development of the ability to be critical of the definitions of some stylistic terms. It should be confirmed by the results of the analysis of material (e.g., literary texts).
Materials and methods. The material for our research is the Russian poetry of the 19th – 20th century and the definitions of the following terms such as oxymoron, chiasm, zeugma, segmentation, rhyme, presented in the dictionaries of linguistic terms and scientific works of philologists. Working with the terms, we used the ways of descriptive methods such as extraction of examples from literary texts, observation, analysis from structural, grammatical and semantic points of view, classification, conclusions.
Results. In our research we defined and proved the stages and the methods of work on the essence of stylistic means, which are used by writers in literary texts.
Discussion. We underline the importance of critical attitude to the definitions of terms, which do not have a single interpretation.
Conclusion. It is concluded that working with terms contributes to the consolidation and accumulation of terminological potential, the development of the ability to think independently, analyze existing
theories and critically evaluate them, apply knowledge in practice.
